New Well Re-stabilization Discussion With SpeedBag

The SpeedBag HydraSleeve is a game-changer when we discuss equilibration times and well re-stabilization using HydraSleeves.

So,  how long does it take for the well to return to ambient conditions after the HydraSleeve is installed?  With a SpeedBag the answer:  there is no need for an equilibration period.   The SpeedBags are specially designed to be immediately recovered after installation.

Speedbags  have a strategically-placed hole at the top of the bag that allows water to flow through during installation; thus minimizing drag-down.  Although standard HydraSleeves displace very little water during installation, SpeedBags actually eliminate the need for an equilibration time altogether.  Use of the SpeedBag can eliminate an extra trip to the job site on the first deployment.  There is also less set-up costs involved when switching to HydraSleeve sampling if you use SpeedBags.   Many sites have 100's of wells which would have previously required 100's of weights and clips.  With SpeedBags only 1 set of hardware is needed for the entire site - no matter how large or how small the site.

Solution for trapped gas captured in HydraSleeves

Here's a simple solution to an interesting problem some HydraSleeve users may experience.  It's quite rare, but there are times when a HydraSleeve is retrieved with a hole blown in the bottom.  This is caused from dissolved gas coming out of the solution as the sample is recovered.  Once the sleeve is full and the check valve closes, as it is recovered up the water column, the external water pressure decreases, much like opening a bottle of champagne.  The decreased external pressure allows the dissolved gasses in the sample to expand and, on rare occasions, to the point where the internal pressure exceeds the capacity of the sleeve.  The sleeve will typically burst at the point where the pressure is highest, the bottom of the sleeve.

The solution is to add a small vent hole at the top of the HydraSleeve at the top of the check valve so the trapped gas can escape during HydraSleeve retrieval.

The following videos show what happens when a HydraSleeve is pressurized from the inside and then the same situation with a vent hole added to the top of the sleeve.

As you can see the vent hole solves the problem of trapped gas and the vented sleeve does not rupture.  If you think you have experienced this problem or that your sampling program may encounter this issue; just ask for a customized, vented, HydraSleeve.

This is a simple solution for a simple problem utilizing HydraSleeves, as always....Simple by Design.

Introducing the Wide Mouth HydraSleeve Adapters

We have two new accessories to introduce today. Assembled SWA

When HydraSleeves are used for the size well they are intended - for example, when using 2-inch HydraSleeves in 2-inch wells - they fill in a 1:1 ratio.  When retrieving the HydraSleeve through the water column, most of the water is forced into the filling bag because the water is constricted by the diameter of the well screen.  Therefore a 30-inch HydraSleeve will capture a core sample of water from the 30 inch area directly above where the top of the HydraSleeves sits in the well.

If you try to use a 2-inch HydraSleeve in a 4-inch well, a lot of the water can escape around the outside of the filling HydraSleeve - it's not forced in as fast as it would be when used in a 2-inch well.   Previously we have recommended oscillating the HydraSleeve several times before retrieving them so that you can be sure the sleeve filled within the intended zone.

Now we are introducing a new top attachment that will mimic the mouth of a 4-inch bag.  This 4- to 2-inch Adapter for use with our 2-inch Super/SkinnySleeve will allow you to have the same fill rate as if you were using a 4inch bag in the 4-inch well without repeated oscillation.   The sleeve is threaded between the top reducer and locking ring - follow the instructions for the assembly of the Super/SkinnySleeve PVC Collars.

As you can imagine, if the fill rate is slower when 2-inch diameter HydraSleeves are used in the constricted environment of a 4-inch well; the same is exponentially true for HydraSleeves being used in a tank, lake, pool or any surface water sampling.

The new SWA (Surface Water Adapter) will get the job done in a 6-inch well or larger.  For the Surface Water Adapter we added an even wider mouth to the top of the smaller adapter seen above in order to accommodate larger diameter wells, surface water and tank sampling.

Both of these adapters require check valve activation with just one oscillation of the sleeve through the desired sampling zone.  Pull up on the line ~3 feet; allow it to drop back to the starting point; and then recover to the surface.  A HydraClamp will come in handy when removing the sleeve from the top adapter.  Place the clamp on the outside of the bag at the check valve to form a water tight seal.  Then remove the SWA or 4-2" Adapter and decant the sample into your lab's vials by following the instructions in the HydraSleeve Field Manual.

HydraSleeve SpeedBag Patent Granted

HydraSleeve SpeedBag

We are happy to announce that the US Patent Office has granted a patent on our HydraSleeve SpeedBag.

Back in 2014 we published the following article on the (NEW) SpeedBag.  Here's the updated general information.

In and out, no waiting.
The HydraSleeve SpeedBag’s unique design  minimizes in-well mixing and eliminates the wait for well restabilization.  It still offers all the advantages of the standard HydraSleeve sampler.  Drop them down and pull them up. No waiting!

How is this possible?

The SpeedBag has been streamlined to allow water to smoothly flow by the empty sampler as it is lowered in the well.  The empty 500mls SpeedBag and weight only displace about 50 mls - less than a VOA vial.

See SpeedBag Video here - or on YouTube here

Why use the SpeedBag instead of a HydraSleeve?

  • First deployment at a new site. Deploy and sample the well at the same time.
  • Comparison studies. SpeedBag and other samples can be collected on single trip.
  • Less turbid samples.  Eliminates sediment accumulation over time.
  • A single weight can be used for all wells if decontaminated between wells.

HydraSleeve SpeedBag Specifications

  • No well equilibration period needed in 2” sch. 80 wells and larger.
  • There are 2 sizes of SpeedBag available now - both for 2-inch wells:  500 mls = Sched 80; 900 mls = Sched 40
  • Empty 500 mls SpeedBag displaces about 50mls when deployed.
  • SpeedBag has a tensile strength of about 15 lbs.

The New Cordry Core Sampler

What's in your well?

Introducing a simple way to find out - the NEW Cordry Core Sampler. clampedcore

Collecting a continuous, sequential core sample from a long well screen in a 2-inch well is typically a difficult and potentially expensive task. Previously, long HydraSleeves and SuperSleeves that could carry out this job were heavy and unwieldly, and our recommendation was that retrieval should be accomplished with at least two people. Alternatively, discrete interval samples from long well screens could be taken by deploying multiple samples at the various intervals. To provide a simpler and less expensive option, GeoInsight has developed the Cordry Core Sampler.

The Cordry Core Sampler will collect a continuous, sequential core sample to vertically profile a water column. It is a thin sleeve that allows it to be easily deployed and retrieved with minimal strain or effort. Once retrieved, the sample in the sleeve will mirror the column of water in the well. Concentrations from different intervals are not mixed and can be isolated using special clamps applied to the outside of the sleeve.

Please click the link below for the white paper that describes this new product in detail.

The Cordry Core will be custom made per application, based on the well specs (2-inch diameter wells only) and customer needs.
